If you’re not using your dental benefits to their maximum every year, you may be leaving money on the table. In this blog from Vivid Smiles, we’ll discuss how you can maximize your benefits – and use them before you lose them! Let’s get started.
All dental plans have a yearly deductible that you must pay before they cover your dental work. This is often between $25 and $250. They also have a maximum benefit each year, which is between $1,000 and $2,000 for most plans.
What this means is that if you need dental work for you and your family, you should try to maximize your benefits by meeting your deductible, but not exceeding your maximum yearly benefit.
For example, if you have a $50 deductible, your child gets a cavity in June, and it costs you $100 out of pocket to resolve the issue, you will already have met your deductible for the year. This means that the cost of your remaining dental care will be lower until you reach your annual maximum benefit.
So if you also need to replace a few crowns or fillings in your own mouth, it may be a good idea to schedule the rest of your appointments with Vivid Smiles right away, and keep getting dental work until you reach your yearly maximum benefit. By maximizing your yearly benefits, you can reduce your overall out-of-pocket costs for dental care quite a bit!
Most dental plans “roll over” and reset on January 1st of each year. This means that your yearly deductible and maximum benefit will reset on this date, and that you’ll also become eligible for free preventive care again.
However, this is not always the case. Some plans are different, and may roll over during the month that you signed up for the plan. This is rare, but you should still double-check your policy to make sure you understand how your benefits work, and when they roll over and reset.
Almost all dental insurance policies cover 100% of the cost of two teeth cleanings and oral exams per year, as well as an annual set of x-rays. If you see an in-network dentist for preventive care, you won’t owe a dime!
That means you need to make sure you’re using your benefits to the fullest, and you should always come and see Dr. Paruchuri or Dr. Sahai for a teeth cleaning and oral exam every six months. If you’re not seeing the dentist twice per year, you’re leaving money on the table, and you’re not maximizing your dental benefits.
